Q- do the following words appear in the Hadith? bismillahi wa a’la barakatillah.
1.Have been unable to locate any authentic ḥadīth that indicates that the Prophet (s) recommended سم الله وعلی بركة الله to be read before eating food. Whilst one would fulfil the Sunnah of invoking Allah’s name by reading it, one should not regard the specific wording as a Prophetic supplication, and adopt the words used by the Prophet (S) instead, as this is more virtuous and beneficial.
2. It is therefore advisable to read بسم الله before eating as this is the duʿāʾ the Prophet (S) would read and advise the companions to read. This is the most authentic duʿāʾ. This is the view of Imam Abū al-Ḥasan al-Shādhlī al-Mālikī (d. 656/1258), ʿAllāmah Ibn al-Ḥāj al-Mālikī (d. 737/1336), Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī al-Shāfiʿī (d. 852/1449), Shaykh Zarrūq al-Mālikī (d. 899/1493), ʿAllāmah Qasṭalānī al-Shāfiʿī (d. 923/1517), ʿAllāmah Ibn ʿAllān al-Shāfiʿī (d. 1057/1647), Muḥaddith al-ʿaṣr Shaykh Muḥammad Yūnus Jownpūrī al-Ḥanafī (b. 1355/1936) and many other Ḥanbalī and Ḥanafī scholars.
3. One may also read the words بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم in accordance with the view of many scholars
