48. THE GOOD DEEDS OF ABU BAKR AND ‘UMAR (R)? നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണത്തിന് തുല്യമായ സൽകർമ്മങ്ങൾ ഉമർ(റ) ചെയ്തു?
Q- Is the following Hadith authentic? Sayyidah ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) says, “I asked Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) ‘does anyone have good deeds equal to the number of stars’? He replied, ‘yes, ‘Umar. I asked, ‘What about the good deeds of Abu Bakr’? He replied, ‘All the good deeds of ‘Umar are like one good deed of Abu Bakr” (Razin).

Hafiz Khatib Al Baghdadi (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith with a chain that consists of a fabricator. He himself has declared many Hadiths of this narrator as fabrications. ‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) has also declared the Hadith a fabrication. (Tarikh Baghdad, vol. 7 pg. 643/4. Refer: Mizanul I’tidal, vol. 1 pg. 290, number: 1099, Lisanul Mizan, vol. 2 pg. 274, number: 1426 and Al La-Alil Masnu’ah, vol. 1 pg. 279 )

Imam Razin ibn Mu’awiyah has also cited this narration in his book. The author of Mishkatul Masabih has referenced this narration to him.

Razin ibn Mu’awiyah (rahimahullah) is an Andalusian scholar from the sixth century – Demise: 535 A.H. His book: ‘Tajridus Sihah’ is famous. However, he doesn’t usually cite the chains for his narrations. One will frequently notice senior latter-day Muhaddithun stating that they were unable to locate several narrations that Razin had cited in his book.

‘Allamah Dhahabi (rahimahullah) writes: ‘He added in his books some very unreliable narrations. He would have done better had he kept his book free of them!’. (Siyar A’lamin Nubala, vol.20 pg.205)

One should avoid quoting the above narration for the following reasons:

1. The chain of this narration is yet to be located.

Once it is located, it needs to be verified. Some people have a misconception that the existence of a chain is sufficient to render it acceptable. This is a myth! The reliability of a narration will be judged according to the strength of the chain.

2. This narration has been sourced from Razin’s book, which has many unreliable narrations as explained above.

3. This narration has exaggerations which are usually found in fabricated Hadiths (mawdu’)

4. The popular, reliable Hadith sources have no mention of this Hadith.

5. To quote a Hadith like the above puts one in danger of transmitting unreliable Hadiths, since there is a real chance of it being a fabrication. Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) has strictly warned against spreading fabrications.

In such a situation, caution demands that we abstain from spreading, sharing or publicising this narration.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best
